Yes, A 3rd year named Andrew is involved in this, but he reliably informs me
that as they missed the society registration deadline for this year
nothing's going to be done about it till next year. Surely a multi-player
quake etc society and a comp society would be the same thing ;-) Games,
nerdy disscussions about OS's etc etc.

Subject: Comp Soc - the sequel
Hi there guys,
This is a temp mailing list for people who are interested in the creation of a
Comp Soc.
1. If you don't want to be in it - then email me and I'll revise the list.
2. If you know someone who wants to be in it, then email me.
I've already put in an application to create a majordomo list for this purpose
so ...
This soc is really whatever you guys what it to be.
My idea of a good society is one that involves a lot of drinking and a bit of
learning - in the form of either computer games or inviting guest speakers
around. So, really that's what I'm aiming for. After all, I mean, if you just
want to drink, there's the whisky soc and several other socs that you can
join for that kind of thing. And making a soc just about academic stuff can
be really boring and no one wants that ... Any comments?
I'm thinking in the form of what most other academic soc (eg Law Soc and Medics
Soc) do. Stuff like a few drinking sessions during the term, and maybe a few
guest speakers and special dinners/themed nights ... and we have the possiblitiy
of stuff like comp games tournments. I'm open to suggestions and comments ...

There's been a lot of ideas thrown about for a Comp Soc to setup, Andrew
Scott and I are setting up a Game Soc though.
It's for all those of you who fancy enjoying some network gaming or finding
out more about Computer gaming in general.
We can however be persuaded to include other computer related activites (
like the ones that have been suggested for Comp Soc. ) if people are
interested.
Subsciption lists should go in the JCMB Machine Halls on Thursday.

Folks,
There's been rather a lot of traffic to <infstudents> recently
about the formation of a Computing/Informatics society, which has been
adversely commented upon (the usage, not the society :-)
The <infstudents> mailing list (alias) was set up to "enable
MEMBERS OF STAFF in the Division of Informatics to contact students" -
and I'm not SURE the above usage falls into this category...
Whilst I acknowledge that there might be a need for a global
mailing list/alias to contact all students by anyone who has a mind
to, this - unfortunately - ain't it. So could I suggest (in a caring,
sharing way, of course :-) that this thread be taken elsewhere?
Thanks...
WHILE I'M ON THE SUBJECT...
Could those of you who have forwarded your mail to external
mailboxes (no names, no pack drill) please keep an eye on them? The
recent spate of mailings has generated an annoyingly large number of
bounces due to people being over (mail) quota, or having duff
re-directs.
Thank you for your indulgence,

I think that's a great idea... For me the best time would probably be on a
Wednesday (this is a good idea because this time is reserved for
societies/social things), or on a Friday.

Thought I'd just say that I don't have a clue where the Peartree is and I
think KB is pretty much neglected by first years so that's even more of a
reason to go there...

The Peartree is on the left side of appleton tower looking at it from the car

KB would be a bit unpratical for me.
As for recognizing each other we'll just be the people looking for others

'Fraid I can't make the meeting on Wednesday as I have a lecture then, 3-5 pm
(they did offer to change it but no-one was too keen on the alternative, Friday
4-6!). Will try to drop in if it ends any earlier, but I guess you'll have
moved on.
My only input would be to ask people to let me know if there are any games
tournaments organised, please.
Have a good meeting,
Tim

It's too cold to hanging around outside waiting for people, lets meet
inside. There should be no problem getting some seats at 3 o'clock.

Hi. *tap* *tap* is this thing on? Actually, it's a real question, as I tried to
send this before, and I believe it didn't actually reach the list.
Allright, then I'll begin. I'm yet another CS student (more
specifically, currently CS1, AI1[0], M1Y [1]), and general geek[3]. I meant to
drift over to the CompSoc when I heard of it - in fact, when I heard initially,
and then something about the charter, I believe - but a potent combination of
forgetfullness and stuff[2] intervened. Suffice to say, I'm drifting more
quickly (and accurately) now.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't just drift over to the Pear Tree next
Wednesday? Such as that not being the location or time, or nobody actually
intending to go, or you plan to acheive world domination by the means of (for no
fathomable reason) my assassination, or...
Anyway, assuming yes, is the group easy to spot, or are you all undercover?
Sorry to bore you with my ramblings, and as the feetnotes are rapidly breeding
due to the fact I was just reading alt.fan.pratchett, I'll go now. Bye.
[0] Really not enjoying AI though. Great subject, shame about the course.
Probably do something else next year.
[1] Um, everybody knows/almost knows those acronyms, right?
[2] Come to think of it, I don't even know what. I don't *do* that much,
really, when it all comes down to it. Never mind. Although I have been spending
quite some time flat-hunting lately.[4]
[3] Well, lets see. Long hair, likes coding (but only for linux/misc UNIX),
some gaming, etc. Currently going through a read-pop-science book phase, listen
to metal amoung other things, etc. I think I might just be in the general area.
[4] C'est ne pas footnote [4].

I've been reading a lot lately about what Oxford anf Southampton CompSocs
are gettin' up to... For example, Oxford runs a lab, and Southampton does
student support. I was wondering anything like that would ever happen up
here...

Oh, and for the last time, can Bruce Cran, Tim Murray, Tom Chothia, Rob
Murray, and T Willis move over to the dcs list. (I think you may have
overlooked this because I automagically CCed things to you -- the mailer

Agreed... I was just amazed at what some of the other CompSocs around the
country are doing. Collaboration with the Tardis project is a good thing;
the only problem is that 1st years (and most of us are) aren't allowed to
work with/have accounts on Tardis

Words of the Yoda:
My suggestions - some maybe wise and most probably will not :
Freshers week
We should get the Freshers to go to the Peartree or something during Thursday
of Freshers week (cos the freshers fair is on Wed and Thurs, so it would be a
good idea on Thurs. At some time like 3/4pm. Promise them food - always a good
idea. Mark should give a little speech about what the CompSoc does, eventwise
as well - and hopefully, by this time, we would have worked out something
impressive - then get them to sign on the dotted line and join the society. We
should then have "Beer-n-teering" on thurs night (less busy than a fri night)
starting at 8/9pm and ending 8/9am next morning. We'll work out something -
i.e.clues, what pubs to go to ... that could be our first social event.
Programme for 2001
We really need to get out there and tell :
1. The University Staff
2. The university students
3. The Edinburgh IT industry
4. Other Universities in Scotland (esp. Heriot Watt and Napier)
that we're here and ready to establish new connections. A lot of this will be
down to the committee and esp Mark - as he's the pres and is the figurehead for
the committee, so we have to do that BEFORE the start of next term so that we
can plan things (i.e. joint projects). But remember, I don't think that anyone
in the Divison of Informatics know that we exist. I think it would be a really
good idea to <ick> make friends with Stevie Gilmore</ick> so that he can lots
of nice freshers. I think, basically, we should really need to publicise
ourselves. And we need to start at the bottom - at our uni, our divison itself.
As for debates and other ideas, I really think we should keep a society diary.
i.e. get a diary and really start planning things. ie. in week 5, wednesday
night, in the debating hall in Teviot, we will have a debate on whether "Bill
Gates is satan in disguise" etc ..
Edinburgh uni itself has lots. There's loads of stuff in JCMB and if we could
get DCS to recognise us then we could start doing cool stuff.
I really think that we should sit down, properly. Yes, properly, one meeting
and bash it all out. i.e. no one goes unless we sorted this out. I'll bring a
2000/2001 academic diary with me on Tuesday/Wed and we'll bash it all out. ok?
